It utilizes its reinforced internal structure to ensure its limited, temporary performance after air pressure loss. Once air pressure leaves the tire, it can still be driven on for 50 miles up to 50 mph. This prevents the tire from being stranded on the side of the road due to damage. Instead, the tire can be driven to a nearby location, where the damaged tire can be changed or fixed. Run flat tires should never be mounted on the same vehicle mixed with regular tires, as their internal structure makes them heavier.
