The World's Curviest Roads

Agota Szabo - February 14, 2020

All of us love the wide open road, where all you need to do is just to enjoy the drive. Sadly, not all roads offer this relaxing experience. Getting up a mountain or to a higher elevation requires hairpin turns along the road, which make your vehicle’s climb up the mountain safer and easier, but they require your full attention during the drive.

Today, we will take a look at some of the roads, located around the world, which sport the most hairpin turns and curves along their stretch.

North Yungas Road, Bolivia

Not only this is one of the deadliest roads in the world, the North Yungas Road also sports numerous curves and hairpin turns. According to Google Maps, this road features over 200 hairpin turns, which just adds to the dangers of the region.

Three Level Zigzag Road, Himalayas

While the road provides breathtaking views of the surrounding scenery, you might not want to take your eyes off the road. Along its approximately 18-mile stretch, the road features over 100 turns. There are no guardrails as the road climbs up to a 9,050 feet elevation, which requires the driver’s full attention to ensure a safer journey.

99-Bend Road, China

The Tianmen Mountain Road or 99-Bend Road in China has exactly 99 hairpin turns and curves. The road features no guardrails as it reaches the top of the Skywalk at Tianmen Mountain Zhangjiajie National Park. The 99 hairpin turns on a relatively short distance make conquering this road harder than it looks and it earned the road a place among the most dangerous roads in the world.

Tsugaru Iwaki Skyline, Japan

The Tsugaru Iwaki Skyline toll road in Hirosaki, Japan offers a steep ascent to Mount Iwaki. The road sports 69 hairpin turns along a 6.1 mile stretch. The road ascends 2,644 feet and has a gradient up to 10%. It is considered as one of the most dangerous mountain roads in Japan.

Los Caracoles, Chile

It seems that most roads with lots of hairpin turns are considered dangerous. While the Los Caracoles in Chile only sports about 17 turns, has an elevation of 768 feet and is well maintained, the lack of guardrails and the large trucks frequenting it can make the driving experience less secure.

Lacets de Montvernier, France

The Lacets de Montvernier in France links to the village of Montvernier with the world below the mountain. The road features 17 hairpin turns as it sneaks its way up the side of the mountain. It has been recently added as a section to the Tour de France cycling race. The road is narrow with sharp turns and large vehicles are forbidden from driving on it.
