OVERVIEW

The Dunlop SP Sport 01 DSST is a performance and high performance, summer tire manufactured for passenger vehicles.

The tire was manufactured with Dunlop's Self Supporting Technology, DSST for short. It reinforces the tire's structure for it to be able to maintain the weight of the vehicle and its passengers for a limited time after air pressure loss. When the air pressure leaves the tire, due to a puncture, malfunction or other damage, the tire can still be driven on for 50 miles up to the speed of 50 mph. This prevents the driver from being stranded on the side of the road with a flat tire and allows them to drive to a location where they can change or fix the tire or issue. Run flat tires are typically manufactured for vehicles that do not have space for a spare tire. Run flat tires cannot be mixed with regular tires, as their internal structure is much heavier.

The model has excellent summer weather traction. The aggressive asymmetric tread design and the silica-based summer weather tire compound work together to improve the dry and wet weather road grip. The asymmetric tread design's optimized tread block placement and special groove design ensures a firm grip on all dry and wet road surfaces, while the compound keeps its flexibility and prevents heat build-up in hot weather conditions. The special groove design prevents hydroplaning by dispersing water from below the tire's footprint. The model, however, cannot be used in colder winter temperatures, as it loses its traction when driving on ice or snow.

The special silica compound lowers the overall weight of the tire, which decreases the rolling resistance. The rolling resistance is the force affecting the tire, which determines how much energy the vehicle needs to maintain the tire's motion. The reduced rolling resistance effectively lessens the vehicle's fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as it eases the pressure off the tire. This makes the model more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly. The lowered rolling resistance also manages to slow the tread wear rate down.
