A bead lock wheel is a special type of rim that uses bolts to lock the tire’s bead to the rim.
In normal cases the air pressure inside the tire is enough to lock the bead to the rim during its performance. This is true for everyday tires used in everyday situations. In such cases, the properly inflated tire’s air pressure maintains the model’s ideal shape and ensures the bead’s connection to the rim. If the bead is locked to the rim, the wheel rotates along with the tire and ensures a safe driving experience.
However, this is not always the case. Some extreme situations need drivers to deflate their tires. by lowering the psi inside the tire, the air pressure is unable to maintain the same level of connection between the rim and the bead. This can lead to the bead slipping off the rim of the tire coming off the rim completely, as the tire is unable to keep up with the wheel’s rotation.
This typically happens with racing or off-road vehicles.
When it comes to racing, the tires are deflated to give a larger road contact patch and to improve the vehicle’s performance. This can be dangerous and it is not recommended.
With off-road vehicles, deflating the tires will improve the vehicle’s performance. A fully inflated tire is more prone to off-road damage and it will not have good traction on certain terrains. However, by deflating the tire the softer surface contact area will move over sharp rocks, which would easily damage it otherwise, and it improves the off-road traction greatly.
By deflating the tire, the risk of it separating from the rim is higher. A small deflation won’t cause severe problems, but its amount without a bead lock wheel depends on the tire, the vehicle and the terrain entirely.
Bead lock wheels basically lock the tire’s bead to the rims and prevent their separation even when the tires are, sometimes completely, deflated. The bead lock rim clamps the rim between an inner and an outer ring, which are then held together by different sized bolts. By ensuring the constant connection between the tire and the wheel, the tire can securely perform in a deflated state.
Bead lock wheels are a recommended necessity for extreme off-road enthusiasts.
