Road trips can be dangerous if you are not prepared for them. Especially since some of the most scenic roads in the country have the highest crash rates. Today, we will take a look at the most dangerous roads in the USA, based on the number of crashes that happened on them.
10. Interstate 95, North Carolina
Interstate 95 appears twice on the list. It is a part of the US Interstate Highway System and it runs along the entire East Coast of the country and it’s the main interstate in the region. The North Carolina section of Interstate 95 is 181.71 miles long and it crossed the state from north to south. In the last decade there were over 200 fatal crashes on the Interstate, which have caused 240 fatalities.
9. Interstate 5, Washington
Interstate 5 connects the states on the West Coast as it runs from the Canadian to the Mexican border. The Washington section is the most fatal part of the interstate. It is 276.62 miles long and it is the only interstate that completely crosses the state. Interstate 5 has about 25 fatal crashes a year, with 245 crashes and 258 fatalities altogether in the last 10 years.
8. Interstate 40, Arizona
Interstate 40 runs across the country from North Carolina to California. It appears three times on today’s list as it is one of the most travelled roads in the U.S. and different sections of it have higher fatality numbers. The Arizona section cuts through the state for 359.11 miles and most of it replaced the famous Route 66. In the last 10 years 249 crashes were reported with 293 fatalities.
7. Highway 90, Louisiana
U.S. Route 90, or Highway 90, runs from Florida to Texas. The Louisiana section is 297.6 mile long as it cuts through the state from east to west. On average 27 crashes happen a year. The last decade saw 271 crashes and 295 fatalities in this section of the route. The most famous crash caused the tragic death of actress Jayne Mansfield in 1967.
6. Interstate 95, South Carolina
For a second time Interstate 95 is on our list. This interstate has a 198.8 mile long stretch in South Carolina as it cuts through the state. On average the road sees more than 2 crashes in a year, with 244 crashes in the last year. In the last decade these crashes caused 301 fatalities.
5. Highway 83, Texas
Highway 83 runs through the entire country from north to south, from North Dakota to Texas. The Texas section of the road is 893.4 mile long as it cuts through the state. This highway is also known as the Texas Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway. In the last 10 year, about 26 fatal crashes happened on average per year. The total number of crashes in the last decade is 268, which have caused 336 fatalities.
4. Interstate 65, Alabama

Interstate 65 runs from Indiana to Alabama as it crosses the country from north to south. The Alabama portion was dedicated as Heroes Highway in memory of the September 11th attacks. In the span of the last 10 years, 336 crashes happened, with 33 fatal crashes per year. These accidents caused the death of 389 people.
3. Interstate 40, New Mexico
The second section of Interstate 40 that appears on our list is the New Mexico one. This section runs for 373.50 miles from east to west. As one of the main roads crossing the state, it connects it with Arizona and Texas. On average 34 fatal crashes happen in a year. The last decade saw 334 accidents along the interstate, which caused 395 fatalities.
2. Interstate 40, Tennessee
The Tennessee part of Interstate 40 is 452 miles long as it crosses the state from west to east. The deadliest section of Interstate 40 sees 43 crashes on average in a year. In the last 10 years 437 accidents were reported on this stretch of road, which have cause 517 fatalities.
1. Highway 1, Florida
Highway 1 or U.S. Route 1 is a major highway connecting the entire East Coast. The Florida section is by far the deadliest road in the U.S. It runs for 545.03 miles and it runs along the coastline. Part of the road, the Florida Keys Overseas Highway, is designated as an All American road. This road was the place of most of the fatal crashes in the year. In the last decade, the road saw 1079 deaths, which were caused by 1011 crashes.
These roads sections are the deadliest in the country. Some run along scenic drives and highways, while others are designated as such. Crashes happen for various reasons, caused by the drivers and other vehicles as well as road hazards, so you need to stay vigilant.
