Run Flat Tire

Run flat tires are special as they allow the tire to be driven on after the loss of air pressure. Their stronger construction maintains the tire’s shape and enables the tire to withstand the weight of the vehicle and passengers for 50 miles up to the speed of 50 mph.

The reinforced internal structure of the DriveGuard and the special cooling fin pattern on the tire’s sidewall work together to enable the tire’s performance for a limited time once damage occurs. The spirally wrapped nylon cord reinforced dual steel belt structure prevents deformation and guarantees the tire’s optimal shape at all times. The tire features Bridgestone’s NanoPro-Tech strengthened sidewall compound and a special cooling fin design on the sidewall, which redistributes the heat and friction along the tire after a puncture causes air pressure loss.

This enhancement prevents the driver from being stranded on the side of the road once the tire is damaged. Instead, they can securely drive to a nearby location to take care of the issue, by either fixing or changing the tire. Run flat tires are heavier due to their special construction which improves their durability. However, this means that they cannot be used together with regular tires on the same vehicle.

The special tread pattern and all season tire compound work together to increase the tire’s all weather performance. The DriveGuard combines its silica-based tire compound and its special asymmetric tread design to increase the dry, wet and winter weather road gripping ability. The compound keeps its flexible traction throughout the year, while the tread with the optimal siping and lateral groove placement increases the number of biting edges to enhance the wet and winter weather performance. The constant road contact and traction enable the tire to safety perform to its best capability throughout the year.

The tread design features wide circumferential grooves that effectively prevent hydroplaning. Hydroplaning is a dangerous road hazard, which causes the tire to lose its road contact and the vehicle to skid as a result. It happens when standing water or slush located on the road cuts off the tire’s contact with the road surface. The circumferential grooves of the tread pattern eliminate water and slush from below the tire’s footprint and actively resists hydroplaning as a result.

Extended Tread Life

Manufacturers strive to extend the tread life of all their tires with different techniques. As mentioned before, Bridgestone’s DriveGuard comes with an astounding 50-60,000 mile treadwear warranty.

The stronger internal structure prevents the deformation of the tire’s shape, which also stabilizes the tread elements. This, along with the tread design’s even driving pressure distribution, prevents irregular wear formations across the tread area. The equally spread out forces of acceleration, cornering and braking actively lengthen the tread life and with it the tire’s usability.
