Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT2 Review

Agota Szabo - January 14, 2020

Even light trucks need winter tires to safely perform in winter weather conditions. These tires are generally made specifically for light trucks in mind, with stronger constructions, durable compound and better controllability. Nokian, one of the leading tire manufacturers of winter tires, offers a wide range of different winter tires for larger vehicles.

One such model is the Hakkapeliitta LT2, which you can find among our winter tire lineup, here at Priority Tire. This model promotes exceptional winter traction, good handling and maneuvering ability, and reinforced heavy-duty durability. Furthermore, the tread features tread wear indicators that make following the tire’s wear rate easier.

Winter Weather Traction

Winter tires must provide traction in severe winter weather conditions. Manufacturers utilize the tread design and winter compound to enhance the model’s traction in such weather conditions, to ensure a safer driving experience.

The Hakkapeliitta LT2 improves its winter grip with the tread design and winter compound. The winter compound keeps its rubber flexibility even in cold temperatures, enabling the tire to securely perform in winter conditions. The directional tread design’s high-density siping detail, staggered tread block placement and optimal groove detail work together to boost the number of biting edges gripping the road surface during the drive. The tread is also pinned for studs, which can be added to further improve the grip on ice- and snow-covered road surfaces.

The detailed groove pattern, on the other hand, also helps prevent hydroplaning. Hydroplaning is a dangerous road hazard which causes the vehicle to skid and the driver to lose control over it. It can be hazardous as it can easily lead to accidents. The zigzag circumferential and angled lateral grooves manage to channel water and slush away from the tire’s footprint. This allows the model to maintain its surface contact at all times, boosting the winter weather driving safety levels.

Controllability and Handling

Tires create the only contact between the vehicle and the road surface during the vehicle’s performance. As such, they are responsible for the vehicle’s controllability and driving safety.

The Hakkapeliitta LT2 improves the driver’s control over the vehicle by increasing the tire’s controllability. The directional tread design’s continuous center rib maintains a close surface contact, which upgrades the steering responsiveness and the driving stability. In other words, the steering becomes faster and more precise in its response to the driver’s commands, while the structure is secured against the driving pressure affecting the model. As a result, the tire can securely perform as the driver maintains their control over the vehicle throughout the drive.

The tread design also improves the maneuvering ability. The directional tread design, with the optimal siping detail increases the braking power. This pattern creates friction between the tire and the road surface at the moment of braking, significantly shortening the tire’s braking distance. The shoulder tread block placement, with their siping detail, improves the cornering ability. These tread elements heighten the number of biting edges gripping the road surface, upgrading the cornering and maneuvering power to guarantee a safer performing ability.

Heavy-Duty Durability

The trengthened construction upgrades the load and driving durability. Nokian used its Aramid Sidewall Technology which places aramid fibers into the sidewall structure. This reinforces the tire against the driving pressure affecting the model, enabling the tire to improve the load and driving strength.

In other words, the tire upgrades its load carrying and withstanding power, without allowing the tire to deform under the pressure. This increases the model’s load capacity significantly. Furthermore, the stronger structure does not allow the tire’s deformation during its performance, increasing its controllability and driving security in versatile weather conditions and road situations.

Tread Wear Indicators

Tread wear indicators are located on the tire’s tread area. They are tasked with portraying the tire’s tread wear rate and manner, and sometimes, the weather conditions the tires can be used in. The Hakkapeliitta LT2 features a Driving Safety Indicator (DSI) and a Winter Safety Indicator (WSI) on its tread area.

The Driving Safety Indicator places numbers in percentages on the tread area. With the tread wear these numbers wear out, accurately representing the percentage of tread depth left on the tire. In this manner, the driver can successfully follow the tread wear rate and manner of the tire. This also prevents the driver from using worn-out tires, as the tread visually notifies the driver when the tread is about to wear out.

The Winter Safety Indicator shows the weather conditions the tire can be used in. It places a snowflake symbol on the tread area. As long as this snowflake symbol is visible, the tire can safely perform in winter conditions. However, when the snowflake wears off the tire, at the 40% tread depth mark, the tire is no longer considered safe to use in winter conditions. As a result, the driver can follow the tread wear of the tire and change the tire when it wears out.
