Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Review

Agota Szabo - February 15, 2019

High performance vehicles need tires that can handle their performing capability at high speeds. These tires must maintain their shape and traction under the high speed driving pressure and perform in the desired manner at all times, to ensure excellent driving safety.

Continental’s ExtremeContact DWS 06 is one such tire. It offers extreme high speed performance, without sacrificing its traction and handling. Furthermore, unlike other high performance tires, this model comes with a 50,000 mile treadwear warranty.

Here at Priority Tire we offer a wide range of sizes of this model, and all drivers are sure to find the size they need.

All Weather Performance

All season tires offer first-rate traction in a variety of weather conditions. They are capable of gripping the road surface from the heat of summer to the cold winter weather temperatures. The compound and tread design of these tires improves their year round driving safety. The ExtremeContact DWS 06 is one of the rare high performance all season tires we can find on the tire market.

The tire utilizes its optimal tread pattern and all season tire compound to guarantee a secure year round performing capability. The tread design with the optimal siping detail and cross-cut lateral grooves find firm grip on the road surface in dry, wet and winter weather as they increase the number of biting edges. The silica-infused Silane+ all season compound keeps its rubber flexibility and increases the tire’s traction throughout the year. As a result, the tire is capable of securely performing on ice- and snow-covered road surfaces.

The special traction grooves help resist dangerous hydroplaning. These circumferential grooves work together with the center tread’s cross-cut pattern to eliminate water and slush from below the tire’s footprint and avoid irregular tread wear formations. This allows the tire to perform safely in wet and winter weather and to maintain their road contact at all times.

Extended Usability

A longer lasting tread life is always among the goals of manufacturers when designing a new model. While high performance tires usually do not come with such a warranty, Continental puts its faith into the ExtremeContact DWS 06 and offers a 50,000 mile warranty with the model.

The tire was manufactured with Continental’s special SportPlus Technology. This technology optimizes the model’s footprint, which manages to evenly distribute the high speed driving pressure along the tread area. This, combined with the silica-based compound’s heat build-up prevention, stabilizes the tread area and avoids tread flexing. In this manner, the tire avoids the formation of irregular tread wear across the tread area, lengthening the model’s usability significantly.

Tread Indicators

The ExtremeContact DWS 06 features alignment and performance indicators on its tread design.

The special QuickView indicators are located on the tire’s parallel shoulders and their wear rate visually represents the vehicle’s alignment. If their wear rate is identical, everything is in order and the vehicle’s alignment is correct. However, if the parallel shoulder indicators are wearing in a different manner, it means that the vehicle’s alignment is off and it needs to be corrected before the tire develops an uneven tread wear pattern.

Furthermore, the tire was design with a performance indicator. Three letters were added to the second rib from the outer shoulder, representing the conditions the tire can perform in. DWS stands for Dry, Wet and Snow traction. When the tire is new all three letters are visible, representing the dry, wet and winter weather performance. As the tire wears out, the letters disappear as well. When the letters wear out and disappear from the tread design, the tire loses the traction the letter represents. So, for example, if the letter ‘S’ wears out, it means the tire will no longer have good traction and grip in winter weather.

High Speed Controllability

Excellent controllability and durability are needed to ensure the tire’s high speed performing capability.

The ExtremeContact DWS 06 was manufactured with Continental’s SportPlus Technology, which optimizes the footprint and tread design to increase the driver’s control over the vehicle. In this manner, the tire maintains a constant road contact, which greatly upgrades the steering response time and accuracy and stabilizes the structure against the high speed driving pressure. This achieves a faster and more precise response to the driver’s instructions, while it secures the structure during the drive.

The tire utilizes different enhancements to ensure its first-rate high speed performance. The silica-based Silane+ compound effectively resists heat build-up during the high speed drive. The tire’s reinforced internal structure features twin steel belts strengthened with spirally wound jointless nylon cap plies that maintain the optimal tire shape. Even under the high speed driving pressure, the tire’s shape does not deform under the pressure affecting it. This results in a safer high speed performance and durability.
